Horror Movie: The Exorcism of Emily Rose (UR; 2005; 119 min.)

After some disappointing movies recently, I was looking for a good scare and this one delivered! Based on a true story about a 19-year-old girl named Emily Rose who becomes possessed while away at college, this movie is truly scary not only because of the great special effects. It’s also because there’s not much scarier than the devil himself.

The story is told mainly through the courtroom trial of the priest who tried unsuccessfully to exorcise Emily’s demons (you discover right off the bat that Emily dies from her possession/exorcism, so no spoiler there). The flashbacks to how it all unfolded are amazing to watch (think twisted body parts and melting eyes). Laura Linney is great as Father Moore’s defense lawyer, an agnostic who changes her mind as she too experiences the “dark forces” at work during the trial.

Very cool too is an explanation for why so many horror movie “happenings” occur in the 3 am hour: because it is the Demonic Witching Hour, and it mocks the Holy Trinity. Also, it is the inversion of 3 pm, the holy hour of Christ’s death.

  • Top Scare: Lucifer
  • Heartbeats: 4 out of 5
  • Gore factor: 3 1/2 out of 5
  • Suspense factor: 4 1/4 out of 5
  • Recommended for: 15 and up…this is not rated, but I’m guessing it would get an “R” easily. Pretty intense stuff!
